These past few weeksI’ve been on hiatus from blogging due to traveling back and forth to my hometown for some social reason or another. During the course of my adventures, I’ve also had a lot of foodie adventures along the way. I do find when dining out I find inspiration in menu items, or will want to recreate something really amazing I ate. Most of the times I recreate these meals with my nutrition guidelines involved. Can this be made Paleo with less salt, sugar and fat (let’s face it! That is the trifecta of all really craveable foods!)? It’s like solving a puzzle for me and I absolutely love to be a food detective. Figuring out what spices go into the flavor profile and the technique used to execute the dishes are some of my cheap thrills haha! I get to have my very own test kitchen to conduct all of my experiments upon the return home.
Generally when I eat out I choose something on the menu that I cannot make at home. For example, If there is duck, lamb, or some exotic meat on the menu then I am all in, no questions asked! Other times I look for the most interesting item on the menu, whether it be a combination of flavors or ingredients. Sometimes I just like to have some healthy versions of classics like the turkey reuben sandwich from a local biergarten which did not disappoint! While I was in Jacksonville I had a bison burger topped with pepper jack cheese, guacamole, and jalapenos (I’m totally going to make this one in the near future!). One evening we went out for Cuban and opted for roasted pork with black beans and rice; my mouth is watering just thinking of it! I also ordered cashew Thai chicken one evening and had the special on the side. It ended up being a perfectly Paleo meal! Nothing about my food choices said bland and boring ot screamed I was following a special “diet”.
Although I chose options that suited both my palate and nutrition, I still found that I was ready to be back to my home cooking. My performance in the gym was not as consistent as it has been over the past three months. Some of that too could be contributed to being off of my normal sleep schedule and a pretty hefty social schedule. Oddly enough, I really didn’t consume too much wine either. I was not upset by my food choices, nor did I feel badly about my workouts, but rather I was happy to have the experience and enjoyed my time while I was away. I think that was the most important takeaway of all of my traveling adventures. I was present in the moment and excited to try new foods with friends. I’ll be looking forward to my next traveling foodie adventure coming up in a week or so! Who knows what this weekend will bring us.
